§ 2-1-9. Mayor; vice-mayor.

  • The mayor of the city shall be elected as provided for in section 10.01 of the charter and the vice-mayor or shall be elected as provided for in section 3.05 of the charter. The mayor shall preside over the meetings of the city council and shall have the same right to vote and speak therein as other members. The mayor shall not have the power of veto. He shall be recognized as the head of the city government for all ceremonial purposes, the purposes of military law and the service of civil process. If a vacancy shall occur in the office of mayor, the vacancy shall be filled as provided in chapter 10 of the charter. If a vacancy shall occur in the office of vice-mayor, the city council shall forthwith fill the vacancy for the unexpired term by majority vote of all the remaining members of the council, including the mayor. In the absence or disability of the mayor, the vice-mayor shall perform the duties of mayor. (Code 1963, Sec. 2-10)
